WestJet adds 11 new US & international destinations

WestJet unveils the largest single-season expansion in company’s history

WestJet today unveiled its largest-ever seasonal non-stop flight schedule, featuring a record eight new international destinations and three additional U.S. destinations for the winter of 2009-2010. By late fall 2009, WestJet will operate service to 66 cities in more than 10 countries, as compared to 51 cities in eight countries one year ago.

Beginning in late fall, WestJet and WestJet Vacations will launch seasonal non-stop service to Varadero, Holguin and Cayo Coco, Cuba; Ixtapa and Cozumel, Mexico; St. Martin; Providenciales, Turks and Caicos; Freeport, Bahamas; Lihue (Kauai), Hawaii; Miami, Florida; and Atlantic City, New Jersey.

'This is another first for WestJet,' said Chris Avery, WestJet’s Vice-President, Revenue and Planning. 'We have never announced as many destinations at one time, which demonstrates that we continue to deliver on our strategic plan by expanding our network and providing our world-class guest experience each and every day. We remain confident that in spite of the current economic conditions, WestJet’s unsurpassed value and our status as Canada’s preferred airline will see old friends and new guests alike flying with us this winter.'

'This schedule represents significant expansion on both the transborder (U.S.) and international fronts,' said Chris Avery. 'Both are strategic decisions as we continue to aggressively pursue and earn profitable market share in these critical areas. WestJet is well on its way to becoming the market leader in many of the most popular sun destinations in the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean.'

WestJet Vacations offers customized vacation packages to all of WestJet’s southern destinations. And for a limited time only, guests who book a vacation package with WestJet Vacations before September 30, 2009, for travel between November 2, 2009, and May 15, 2010, will receive a $400 travel credit per room booked. Guests booking between October 1 and October 31, 2009, will receive a $200 travel credit per room booked. For more information or reservations, please call 1-866-656-3761.

Don't Miss Bastille Day - July 14 - Paris, France

Don't miss Bastille Day, France's national holiday that commemorates the storming of the Bastille at the start of the French Revolution. The big day is July 14, with celebrations beginning the night before.

You can fly from Montreal to Paris from July 7 or 8 to July 17 for only $726 Canadian dollars, including tax, with Air Transat.

France's national holiday commemorates the storming of the Bastille at the start of the French Revolution. Crowds line the Champs-Elysées for a military parade led by the President, and Parisians party until dawn as fireworks explode over the Trocadéro.

The evening before the big day is spent dancing in the Bastille square and at numerous balls that are organised around the city. Worth a look-in are the many parties held by the fire service in their stations, at which the fire-fighters themselves are usually the star attraction (their uniforms providing a lure for the ladies).

On the big day itself, the big parade on the Champs-Elysées sees jets fly in formation as top military brass march from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde. Bringing up the rear and receiving the loudest applause are the fire brigade, perhaps suffering from a hangover or two. It's wise to arrive early if you want to get a good view.

The partying continues all day and later thousands of people come together again at the Champ-de-Mars to watch the fireworks at the Trocadéro. On top of all that, most bars and clubs stage their own celebrations, so take your pick. If you're not in Paris, don't worry: every single village in France has their own dance, with champagne, fireworks, street fun and lots more. Everyone should take in at least one Bastille Day in their lives.

Although nothing now remains of the Bastille fortress itself, the place where it once stood remains an enduring symbol of the ideals of liberté, egalité and fraternité.

Amsterdam Open Monument Days - Sept 12/13

Why not visit Amsterdam's "Open Monument Days" on September 12 and 13, 2009?

The Open Monumentendag Days (Heritage Days) is designed to bring people into contact with the historic environment, and to encourage interest in and understanding of historical monuments and the need for their preservation. During the Open Monumentendag, about 4,000 historical buildings and sites thoughout the Netherlands are open to the public free of charge. Besides opening their doors, many locations also organise on-site activities like exhibitions, music and guided tours. In recent years around 900,000 visitors have participated annually, making the Open Monumentendag one of the Netherlands' premier cultural events.

The Open Monumentendag in the Netherlands started in 1987 and is co-ordinated nationally by the Stichting Open Monumentendag, which has its office in Amsterdam. The Open Monumentendag is part of an international organisation, the European Heritage Days. The Netherlands was one of the first countries to participate and played a key-role in establishing this Europe-wide phenomenon in the 1990s. Today 48 countries are affiliated with the European Heritage Days, which attracts around 20 million visitors every September and October, all keen to explore Europe’s cultural heritage.

Open Monumentendag has established itself as an integral part of the Dutch cultural calendar and has helped significantly in rallying support for the preservation of historical monuments in the Netherlands.

You can fly from Toronto to Amsterdam for only $727 Canadian dollars, INCLUDING TAXES to visit Open Monument Days. Depart on September 7, 9, or 11, and return on September 17, 19, or 24, with flights on Air Transat.
